How To Keep Your Nail Polish From Chipping

Monday 13 February 2012

Regardless of if you have spent a fortune on a manicure, or spent a lot of time doing it yourself, there is nothing more annoying than chipping and ruining your nail polish.

Follow these tips for perfect nails...

Clean your nails
Make sure you take off any remaining polish from your nails. After applying any hand creams, make sure your hands are dry before applying your base coat/nail polish/ top coat.

Groom, not cut your cuticles
Cutting your cuticles can increase your chance of infection, and can make them grow back thicker. Instead just push them back with a wooden tool. Make sure you apply an oil to them too. I love "Lemony Flutter" from Lush.

Keep your nails on the short side
It is much easier to look after your nails when they are shorter. They are less likely to chip, break and get damaged.

Take vitamins everyday
If your diet is lacking in vitamins and minerals, make sure you supplement it daily with vitamins specifically for your hair/skin/nails. Your nails will be more resilient to chipping and damage if they are healthy and strong.

Use a base coat
A base coat is one step that many people miss out on, but it is one of the most important. It helps to protect your nails from becoming discoloured through long term nail polish usage and gives something for the polish to stick to.

Apply 2 thin coats of polish
Applying your polish properly makes a huge difference. If you apply thick coats, you may get an intense colour but your polish can bubble, peel and is more likely to get damaged since it takes longer for your coats to dry.

Use the right polish
If you are in a rush, use a quick drying polish. It will just get damaged, chipped or will have finger prints imprinted onto the polish if you use a polish that takes ages to dry.

Wrap like Jay Z
To minimise chipping, "wrap" the ends by sweeping polish across the top and along the bottom.

Apply your top coat
Your top coat is like a sunscreen that protects you from the elements. Apply every day or two to keep your nails looking flawless.

What are your tips for keeping your nail polish looking perfect?

Evanscencessy - I really love Sally Hansen nail products. I'm using their "Miracle Nail Thickener" as a base coat atm. Otherwise OPI are always fantastic! :) XO
