Acing Your Base: Arbonne "Makeup Primer" Review

Wednesday, 31 July 2013

Every product I've tried from Arbonne has been amazing! I love their lip products (their lipstick and lipgloss) and their mineral foundation powder is incredible.

Today I'm reviewing their primer. Primers can make or break your base. Since my skin has been congested, it has been slightly bumpy in appearance. Sometimes foundation can make it even more noticeable, so using a primer almost daily has been important to me to give a smoother look.

I prefer to use a creamier, almost moisturiser like, primer so I was really unsure about how I would like this. It's a clearish gel with a silicone feel. I've previously used a silicone primer and I hate it. It felt like a mask and I could feel it long after I had applied it, so I was really worried that this would be the first Arbonne product that I didn't love.

Thankfully after using it, I also fell in love with it.

The silicone feeling makes it easy to apply into the skin. You only need a small amount to be able to cover your face (I normally use a 5c piece size) and I like to use my hands to apply it. Once you've rubbed it into the skin, you can't feel it.

I find that this primer makes my foundation (or BB cream) easily sink into the skin, and it sets quickly. When I've used this primer, I find that my skin doesn't look as bumpy. The primer also helps to fill in fine lines (like the ones at the sides of my eyes) and makes my make up last from day to night.

Sometimes I will use the Arbonne Natural Radiance Mineral Powder Foundation to set my BB cream, which you can see my review of here

I love the packaging. The pump makes it easy and hygienic to use. It also looks luxe.

Like all Arbonne products, the outer packaging has all the information you want to know like how to use the products, how to store the product and the ingredients.

Next I want to try out their liquid foundation (which you can see here). I've heard so many great things about it and love the fact that there are so many colours available.

You can buy the Arbonne primer here for $51 for 30ml (If you're not from Australia, change the country on the right hand side for the price in your country).

Are you picky like I am when it comes to primers?

First Impressions: Olay Advanced Cleansing System (Can It Rival My Clarisonic?)

Monday, 29 July 2013

Last week I received something very exciting, and unexpected, in the mail. Priceline and Olay were so nice to gift me the new to Australia "Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleaning System."

Now this isn't completely new to me. When I was looking at buying a Clarisonic back at the end of 2010, I stumbled across a similar looking product by Olay. The Olay cleanser was about a sixth of the price, but I couldn't find a lot of reviews at the time, so instead I bought the Clarisonic online since there were a lot of reviews online.

Now it's Australia's time to get the Olay Cleansing System and I couldn't be more excited to be able to share it with you. One was sold every 3 minutes in the US between 2011-2012, so you know that it must be amazing!

The packaging is classic Olay. It's beautiful and easy to pick out in the many aisles of Priceline.

I love that from looking at the packaging it's easy to understand how to use it (especially if you've never seen or heard about it before). At the bottom of the outer packaging it has a use by date, which is always great.

Inside, the products are neatly packaged. Inside there is....

The Cleansing System
A brush head
Cleanser
Batteries
Instructions

I was really happy that they include the batteries, as I'm one of those people that will buy my daughter a toy and forget the batteries... every single time. So it was nice to have them included so I could use it straight away.

The brush head is easy to apply and locks into place without issue, which is something that I find the Clarisonic lacks (I always have issues locking it into place).

The batteries (AA's) are held in the handle. You rock the bottom of the handle back and forth and it's easily removed.

There are two speeds on the handle. The bigger top button turns it on. It's also the gentle (or slower) speed. The bottom smaller button is a stronger, quicker speed.

One thing that struck me was how soft and gentle both speeds were. I find the Clarisonic can feel rough sometimes, but this was really gentle and slightly ticklish.

Because I don't like to try too many new things at once, I just used the device with my own cleanser instead of using the cleanser that comes in the box.

Also to keep the brush lasting longer, I first remove my make up with a cleansing oil. Then I apply my cleanser onto my face and use the brush all over my face for 30-60 seconds.

The brush helps to clean your skin 4 times better than just using your usual cleanser alone. It can also help your skincare products (like serums and moisturisers) penetrate better.

After using this not only does your skin feel clean, it feels smoother and looks more radiant.

The handle and brush are smaller than a Clarisonic. Personally I prefer this brush head. Because it's smaller it's great for getting around the curves of your nose. It's also the perfect size for between your eyebrows and down the bridge of your nose, as well as the sides of your eyes.

Since the brush head is smaller, it doesn't feel as hard as the Clarisonic brush head. The replacement heads are only $9.95, so they're so affordable. In comparison, the Clarisonic replacement head is $29.00. It's suggested to change your brush head every 3 months, but if you use it daily check the brush head often as you may need to replace it every 2 months instead.

The only con I found was there is no timer that automatically turns it off after the recommended 60 seconds of use. But it's just a small thing that doesn't bother me.

I can say without a doubt that my Clarisonic will be ignored now that I have this. It ticks all the boxes. It's gentle, easy to use, makes my skin so soft and is so affordable. The biggest plus is that because my skin can be quite sensitive and reactive, my skin doesn't become red after using it. At only $32.49 for the kit, it's perfect for every budget.

Next time you're in Priceline, check it out. I promise you won't be disappointed! Otherwise it's available online now to buy here

Will you be purchasing this? Do you already use a face brush (manual or electric)?
XO

PS This is included in Priceline's 40% off skincare sale on Tuesday 30th July and Wednesday 31st July. Get in quick!!!

My Microdermabrasion Experience at "The Laser Lounge"

Friday, 26 July 2013

I learnt about The Laser Lounge last month when the Adelaide beauty bloggers had a meet up there. We learnt all about DMK products, hair removal via their Vectus Laser and ways to make your skin radiant through salon treatments. You can read all about it here

One of the treatments that The Laser Lounge offers is microdermabrasion. I've never had a salon microdermabrasion, so I really wasn't sure what to expect. I've used an at home version of microdermabrasion, but they are very different. They're more of a rougher exfoliant and the results aren't like a salon.

Microdermabrasion is fantastic for promoting healthy skin. It rids the skin of the top layers (including the gross dead skin cells sitting on top of your skin), helps stimulate the production of collagen and brings fresh new skin up to the surface so your skin is soft, smooth and glowing.

Even though I had been there only a couple of weeks earlier and filled out a questionnaire, the technician went over it to make sure nothing had changed. We also spoke about the products I was currently using and made sure that there wasn't anything that I was using that would make my skin more sensitive. We also talked about my skin concerns which is pigmentation due to pregnancy with my daughter 2 years ago. She also explained what the machine did and what to expect. It was then time to get the treatment.

Firstly she washed off the make up I had on. They use DMK products so it was a great way of getting to try out the DMK at home range. Once my skin was clean, it was time to start the treatment.

The machine they use has an almost sand like crystal that goes onto the skin. It doesn't feel uncomfortable, just like you've got sand on your face. The machine also "sucks up" as it glides across your skin. Again it's not uncomfortable, just a different sensation.

As we were doing the treatment, we were talking all things beauty. If you go into a salon for a treatment, get as much information as possible. Ask questions about your skin type (as you might just be surprised that your skin type is different than what you thought it was), possible treatments that would be good for your skin type, what products are good for your skin and more.

After the microdermabrasion, she cleaned off the remaining crystals and applied some hydration and sun protection onto my skin. Whenever you're getting any treatment ALWAYS make sure they apply sun protection afterwards as your skin is more fragile.

The treatment was really quick. It takes less than half an hour so it's still a procedure you can do in your lunch break. The great thing about microdermabrasion is that there's no "down time."

Everyone has different skin and some (like me) will have pink skin after the treatment. My skin is naturally pink so I knew that I would have pink skin after the treatment anyway. The pinkness on my skin just looked like sunburn on my face. They also sell DMK make up there and can apply make up if you're going back to work or just prefer to have make up on when your out in public, so if your skin goes pink, don't worry!!! The make up is made to be safe for after treatments.

After the treatment we talked about what DMK products they would suggest for my skin. Firstly we went through a whole routine. Then we picked out the essential products that are the foundation for clear, radiant skin. If you're on a budget like I am, find out what are the essential products you need.

They picked out....

Deep Pore Pure (cleanser)
Herb & Mineral Mist (a spray that assists the serums and creams to penetrate deeper into the skin)
Acu Creme (exfoliates dead skin cells and is great for congestion)
Solar Damage Gel

I ended up purchasing the cleanser (Deep Pore Pure) and was kindly gifted the Solar Damage Gel at the bloggers meet up. Next on my list that I want are the Transdermal Sunblock (because sunscreen is the best anti aging product around), the Herb & Mineral Mist and the Direct Delivery Vitamin C Serum (which is great for helping with uneven skintone).

My skin felt so soft after the treatment. It also felt quite dry and tight. It's not painful, just slightly uncomfortable. The level of tightness is almost like cleaning your face and skipping the moisturiser. Later that night I washed my faced and applied a serum and moisturiser and my skin no longer felt tight or dry.

I was told that I should expect that for a day or two my skin will feel smooth, but then it will feel a little bit "crusty" for a day or two then become smooth again. Because your skin is thoroughly exfoliated during the microdermabrasion treatment, it's advised to wait a week before exfoliating again.

The next day I came down with the flu, so I feel like the results that I saw over the last 2 weeks aren't typical of what you would expect if you want to get the treatment. Because I was so sick, I wasn't really following my skincare routine as usual. I was lucky to wash my face daily while I was sick and skipped serums and moisturisers. All I was doing was washing my face with the DMK cleanser I bought and following it up with rosehip oil. If you're going to get a treatment like this don't skip applying your serum because serums work so much better as it's on fresh skin. My skin also looked dull because it was so busy fighting the germs internally.

What I did notice is that it did feel soft. Also in the last 2 weeks I've noticed my congestion start to clear. Even my hubby said my skin looked better (and he NEVER notices those types of things).

I'm hoping to go back to the salon and get another one very soon so I can see how effective it is on my skin when my body isn't busy being sick.

While the treatment was complimentary for me (as a gift from going to the blogger meet up), it costs $100 normally. While it's on the pricier side, I've been impressed with the results, even though I've been sick. I feel like it's worth spending more on skincare because then I'll need less make up. In the long run, better skin means less money spent on make up and less time correcting the redness.

You can see what other treatments The Laser Salon has here

I'll be doing a review on the DMK cleanser next week and share my thoughts on how it's improved my skin and how it differs from typical cleansers.

Have you ever had a salon microdermabrasion?

I was kindly provided the treatment for consideration. All thoughts and views are completely my own, and are always 100% honest. See my disclosure policy here.

My Vectus Laser (Hair Removal) Experience At "The Laser Lounge"

Thursday, 25 July 2013

Every month the Adelaide beauty bloggers meet up to talk all things beauty. It's always a lot of fun because the girls are super nice and it's great to have someone to talk to that also loves hair, make up and skincare.

Last month we were lucky enough to go to The Laser Lounge in West Lakes to learn about some great skincare products and treatments that are available there. I've never been to The Laser Lounge before so I wasn't sure what to expect. While they have laser in their name, they do a LOT more than just laser.

They were so nice to have a LOT of yummy food for all of us. Nothing, besides beauty products, excites us bloggers as much as yummy scones (except chocolate or champagne!).

At first we had a bit of a Q&A about The Laser Lounge, the products and brand (DMK) they use and how their salon is different than your regular salon. We had a couple of guest speakers too to help explain about the difference between laser and IPL and how our internal health impacts our skin. The guest speakers were Head of Cosmetic Services at The Laser Lounge, Dr. Amit Kapur, DMK Skin Revisionist, Kristen Schultz and Co-Founder/Head of Client Services at The Laser Lounge, Bita Beyzaee.

What I really loved about The Laser Lounge is how much experience the staff have. It ranged from 6 years to over 16 years experience. They only hire the best of the best. Danne Montague King (the founder of DMK skincare) only wants his products sold in professional salons and each salon (and the staff) need to be at the top of their game. They go through lots of training and DMK products are only sold in selected salons. This is done to make sure that the right products are sold to people, and it also encourages customers to keep in contact with the salon staff to make sure that the products are still correct for their skin.

The day had two parts to it. At first we learnt about DMK products and the treatments that the salon offers.

Lucky Celeste from Becoming Beautiful was picked to have the DMK Enzyme Corrective Skin Treatment. The Enzyme treatment (also called the hulk mask as it is green) isn't your usual facial treatment. Some facials just make you feel good but they don't do a lot to the health of your skin. The enzyme treatment is one of those treatments that will change the health and feeling of your skin long after you've left the salon.

Kristen applied the treatment and gave us so many great tips about skincare and salon treatments. She was honest about the fact that the salon can only do so much... the rest is up to you!! They can give you amazing treatments and assist in repairing your skin, but at the end of the day if you leave the salon and smoke, have a poor diet and skip the sunscreen then all of the hard work the salon does is undone.

The DMK mantra is Remove, Rebuild, Protect, Maintain. The salon can help to remove the issues and use technology that rebuilds the skin. Then it's up to you to protect and maintain the skin by using at home products and keeping your skin healthy.

So what were Celeste's thoughts about the facial...

 TWO THUMBS UP FROM CELESTE!!

You can see a quick video of the DMK Enzyme Therapy in action here.

While the treatment was doing its thing, we also learnt about hair removal. We were told that no technology that exists now is going to get rid of every single strand of hair. It's just not possible. But by using the Vectus Laser, they can get 80%. What I found so interesting is that they use our hair growth to set the timeline of when you should come in next. Unlike other salons that will do laser whenever, The Laser Lounge knows that if the hair isn't at the correct growth stage, no amount of zapping will actually stop the hair growth. This is why a lot of people get disappointed by the "results" from a typical salon. They are promised to be hair free in a small time frame, and are disheartened when they've spent thousands and still have hair.

We all were given a complimentary treatment of the Vectus Laser on our underarms. Before we had the treatment we were given a questionnaire to fill out. What's great about the service there is they make sure it's safe for you. Your health condition and medication you may be taking is all noted down to they make sure your safe and cleared for the treatment.

The treatment was so quickly. They shave under your arms (if you haven't already) and clean the area of deodorant. The Vectus Laser works so quickly. Depending on the area it can be finished in minutes.... yep minutes. My underarm had either 5 or 6 "zaps" and that was it. Then 5 or 6 on the other underarm, and it was finished.

It doesn't hurt, but feels more uncomfortable. It felt like being flicked with a rubber band. But because it happened so quickly, it's easy to put up for the minute or two it took each arm.

Since having it, I've surprisingly noticed less hairs. They also seem to have grown back slower than normal. So for only 1 treatment, I've been so impressed! The gorgeous staff member that did my treatment said she has had it done, and she only has about 5 hairs remaining!!

They are able to adjust the Vectus Laser, so ALWAYS say if the pain is too much (as everyone has different pain levels) or if it just doesn't feel right.

Kate from Seduced by Beauty has a great wrap up on her Vectus Laser experience, which you can read about here. Check out her great pictures of the process of the Vectus Laser. Also Sarah from A Beautiful Story has written about her experience here

If you're interested in hair removal, see the staff in person so they can assess the area and let you know how many times you'll need the treatment. As we're all different, some people may only need a handful of treatments and others more.

One great thing about The Laser Lounge is the fact that they have salons in NSW and QLD too!!! The West Lakes salon is a beautiful place that has the friendliest staff. They are extremely professional and the salon is spotless.

See the Laser Lounge website here for their locations and treatments. Also like their facebook page here to find out about specials and competitions.

You can see the DMK website here to learn about their products.

When was the last time you went to a salon for a treatment?

Indeed Laboratories "Hydraluron Moisture Booster" Review

Tuesday, 23 July 2013

At home skincare has come a long way since I started to get into skincare as a teen. Anyone can get great skin, even if you're on a budget. One of the advancements in skincare has to be specialised skincare products that treat dehydrated skin, uneven skin and dark spots.

Indeed Laboratories has recently exploded here in Australia with Nanoblur. For those that are living under a rock or don't stalk the isles of Priceline (like I do), Nanoblur is almost like a skin primer, not a make up primer. It helps fill in lines and pores to give your skin a flawless look, even without the use of concealer or foundation.

Recently they released 2 new products called "Hydraluron" and "Eysilix." I'll be reviewing "Eysilix" very soon, but today have a review on Hydraluron.

Hydraluron Moisture Booster is so much more than a moisturiser or serum. It contains Hyaluronic acid (which I've blogged about here) which naturally is in our body but decreases as we age and is also effected by diet and smoking.

One of the benefits of using products with hyaluronic acid, is that it penetrates the skin and because our skin has a protective barrier, the Hydraluron actually is locked into the skin. Unlike other moisturising serums, your skin continues to be hydrated long after you've applied the serum. It can hold 1000ml of water per gram of hyaluronic acid, which is the reason why it's a moisture booster.

The Hydraluron also contains Red Marine Algae which helps your skin remain firm, reduce lines and give your skin a smooth surface (which is important to have if you wear make up).

You apply this before any moisturisers. I cleanse my skin, then tone before applying this. Then I apply my serum, moisturiser and SPF. I love that it easily sinks into the skin so even when I'm in a hurry, there's no excuse not to apply this.

You really don't need a lot to cover your face. I normally use a 10c piece to cover my face and neck (and chest if I remember!)

Even though it's an extra step in my skincare routine, it's so simple and easy to add in. The benefits far outweigh the 10 seconds it takes to apply it.

The tube has a twist lid, which is easy to use and safe for travelling.

Information about the company

Open up the pink flap for information overload

It explains the benefits of using Hydraluron

One thing that I was really impressed with was the outer packaging. It has information about the company, the product and how to use it.

I love that it's reasonably priced. For only $34.99 for 30mls, it's affordable no matter your budget. It lasts 6 months after opening it.

You can purchase it instore at Priceline or online here.
XO

PS Indeed Laboratories have recently released in the UK a new product called "Pepta-Bright Fade To Bright" (which you can see here). It's on my wishlist, and I'll be at Priceline the day it's released!! It helps with dark spots and hyperpigmentation. You'll be seeing it being raved about on every UK beauty bloggers blog very soon!

Decoding The Label: Hyaluronic Acid

Anything with the word acid in it can conjure up scary thoughts. But not all acids are the scary kind.

Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our body and holds 1000ml of water per gram of hyaluronic acid. It keeps the moisture locked into our skin and makes your skin plump and youthful. It doesn't just make our skin look healthy, but it also helps our joints. What's amazing about it is the fact that it can adjust its absorption rate in different climates (which is great if you're in a high humidity environment).

When you have moisture loss (or dehydrated skin), the skins texture can feel rough, dry and tight (in a bad way). Applying a product that has Hyaluronic acid will plump up the skin, boost the skins moisture content and helps prevent moisture loss and make it feel moisturised. It will also assist the skin to work the way it's supposed to.

Hyaluronic Acid is great to add into your skin routine as you age. Your moisture levels drop as you age, and it means that skins elasticity reduces and aging signs show up more easily. Our diet and smoking can effect the hylauronic acid levels in our body, so it's important to look after our skin inside and out.

Unlike other ingredients, it can actually penetrate the skin and work below the skins surface. Because it works below the surface, our skins natural barrier locks in the moisture and keeps our skin hydrated and healthy.

If you have dry or dehydrated skin, Hyaluronic acid is the ingredient that you need to add into your routine.

Eles "Dual Action Concealer" Review

Monday, 22 July 2013

Over the last two months I've been having issues with break outs and congested skin. When researching how to get rid of the congestion, one of the methods suggested was using mineral foundations and products. Not only are they great for the skin, they also help the skin to breath rather than being mask like.

ELES Mineral Make up is a mineral make up line that gives you all the goodness of mineral make up in sleek packaging. There are quite a few mineral make up lines that have basic packaging, but ELES is pure sophistication.

Their hypoallergenic formulas contain ingredients that are actually good for your skin. While it's make up, the ingredients selected having skincare qualities and results.

Ingredients like vitamin A, C and E, aloe and chamomile not only are calming on the skin, but also are great antioxidants that help with anti aging.

One of their newest products is the Dual Action Concealer. This isn't like all of the other concealers that I've used before. It's a peachy salmon colour. Since I'm pale I was slightly hesitant as I struggle to colour match at the best of times.

What it looks like out of the tube

How it looks when starting to rub into the skin
*Heavily swatched so it will show up in photos*

TA-DA!! It sinks into the skin and camouflages
imperfections

Even though it's a salmon colour, it will suit most skintones. It easily sinks into the skin and camouflages dark circles and corrects blue undertones and shadows.

Because of the caffeine it energises the skin, reduces dark circles and puffiness. Overtime it also helps with fine lines. It contains dermal fillers, so it's great for those pesky fine lines around the sides of my eyes.

It's a medium coverage concealer, but it can easily be built up to provide more coverage if needed. I find if I use the smallest amount it can also provide a lighter coverage if I don't have puffy eyes or dark circles. Even when I've used this with more coverage, I haven't had issues with caking. I've also found that it lasts all day and night.

The tube is really easy to use. You have 18 months to use it once it's opened before it goes off. I'm glad it's so long, as a little bit really goes a long way. I can imagine I'll still have some left even after using it every day for at least a year!!

You can purchase the concealer for $37.50 from the ELES online site here

Have you swapped to mineral make up when your skin goes berzerk?

Beauty On A Budget: NP Set "Eye Shadow Brush" and "Lip Brush" Review

Friday, 12 July 2013

NP Set is the diffusion line from make up extraordinaire Napoleon Perdis. I've been a huge fan of NP products for years and I have a range of his products from brushes to blushes, primer to foundations. His NP Set line is a more affordable option for those on a budget that don't want to compromise on quality.

I'm a huge brush fun, so when the beauty website Ry kindly offered to send me 2 NP Set brushes, I was so excited. For those of you that don't know, Ry is an Australian online beauty site that stock some amazing brands like Alpha H, Becca, Benefit, Moroccanoil, Essie, Parlux, Redken, Cloud 9 and more. One of the great things about them is the fact that they usually sell their 100% authentic products at below the recommended retail price! They also price match if you find a product at a lower price. You have a HUGE 120 day no hassle return policy and they have free shipping on orders over $99. With every purchase you get free samples and also rewards points to redeem on products (see their rewards program here).

I already own 2 of the NP Set brushes (the Smokey Eye Duo Brush and the Sculpting Duo Brush) and love them. They're a great price, and work just as well as his Napoleon Perdis brushes do.

The 2 brushes that I was sent were the Eye Shadow Brush and the Lip Brush. I don't use lip brushes often, so they are a product that I don't like to spend a lot on. Why spend $30 on a lip brush, when you can get this for $10!!!

A lip brush is fantastic for applying lipstick. It helps to soften out harsh lines and makes it easy to apply to around your cupids bow.

I also love to use this to smudge out kohl eyeliner. It's not too thick, but not too thin so I can help smudge out the liner without it moving up to my eyebrows!

The Eye Shadow Brush is a fantastic brush to apply a quick swipe of eyeshadow. If I'm in a hurry, I turn the brush on it's side and use the brush to do a quick smokey eye. The brush costs only $11.96. It works just as well as the high end brushes I have that were 2 or 3 times the price of the NP Set brush.

The Eye Shadow Brush is quite a thick brush. In the above photo, the Eye Shadow brush is above, with the eye shadow side of the Smokey Eye Duo brush below. As you can see the top brush is nearly twice the size.

The brushes are made with synthetic hairs. They're really easy to wash, and they dry quite fast. I normally use baby shampoo to wash my brushes, and while I haven't had these 2 brushes for that long, my other 2 brushes are still soft and in great condition over a year later. I've also had no issues with the hairs shedding.

I love that the brushes show easily what the brush is for. If you're a newbie to brushes, it's a lifesaver!

I was really impressed with the service I received from Ry. The brushes came securely packaged and safe. They also included Dermalogica samples and a $20 gift voucher from Zodee, which sells swimwear and lingerie. There's also a flyer with 8 coupons which you can use to save $10 off electrical, Fake Bake and NP Set products. The other coupons give you $5 off Redken, Dermalogica, Napoleon, Jane Iredale and L'Oreal.

I know what I'll be using the 10% off electrical coupon on..... THIS!!! It's been on my wishlist since the beginning of the year.

Check out Ry's website here. Also "like" them on Facebook here as they have great competitions and specials announced on their page.

Have you tried anything from the NP Set line?
